ROCK CLIMBING / HIGH WALL RAPELLING
Only minutes from the base camp, campers have the opportunity to climb some of the most beautiful cliffs and rock faces in the Allegheny Mountains. Moving at one's own pace, campers often find themselves going beyond what they thought was possible.
TEAM BUILDING
Numerous team-building exercises teach the participants the value of each member of the team, with a focus on the leadership roles within each group. Campers will later be able to take the lessons they learn at camp and apply them in all of their group relationships, whether on sports teams, school clubs, in peer groups, or in employment situations.
CHALLENGE COURSE
The challenge course is composed of a number of physical and intellectual challenges and is designed to be tackled as a group. Campers will be confronted with challenges like The Wall, the Multi-Vine, and the Whale Watch, among others. While negotiating the course, a camper's leadership skills are thoroughly tested.
AIRSOFT
Campers love the challenge of competing on the AirSoft course. Participants are confronted with a number of different scenarios, which are often changed on the fly by the staff. AirSoft, paintball without the exploding paint pellets, is definitely a camper favorite. It is also a great way to hone one's leadership skills.
CANOEING / KAYAKING
The beautiful Greenbrier River provides a wonderful, nationally Class 3 rated, seven mile run for kayakers and canoeists. Campers get to test their river reading and paddling skills on rapids like Big Rattler and Judicial, among others. Campers also learn a number of invaluable water safety and rescue skills.
WHITE WATER RAFTING
The New River, world famous for its great rapids, provides participants with one of the most exciting rafting adventures imaginable. Campers will get to confront numerous Class IV and V rapids followed by a great dinner overlooking the New River gorge.
CAVING
While at the Academy, campers will have the chance to explore some of the areas most fascinating caves. Campers will learn how the caves were formed and how to navigate safely through them.
LEADERSHIP TOPICS
Over the course of the three-week program, participants learn about Goal Setting, Public Speaking, Time Management, Communication, Conflict Resolution, and Leadership Roles in Society. Campers are encouraged to incorporate the skills they learn in these areas into their daily camp lives and in their lives beyond camp.
PIONEERING
Campers essentially learn how to survive in the wilderness. This includes learning to build shelters, to find food, to cook over an open fire, to build fires, and how to navigate in the wilderness – with or without a compass. Campers are also challenged to find several local geocache sites.
OTHER COOL STUFF
Participants will also take part in a number of other fun activities. These include: astronomy, making homemade bread, building benches, charades, Sunday night campfire, and dinner with the ladies from Camp Alleghany, among other activities.
